Phuket's oldest Chinese Taoist temple, Put Jaw, was built over 200 years ago and dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy. Chinese and Buddhist shrines and temples abound in Phuket, the most spectacular being the famous monastery, Wat Chalong, renowned for its healing powers. When visiting temples in Thailand, dress modestly, remove your shoes before entering and never point your feet in the direction of a Buddha.
On top of the Nakkerd Hills, between Chalong and Kata, sits another symbol, Phuket's famous Big Buddha. At 45 meters in height it is one of the island's most important and revered landmarks.
