Getting to Lisbon

Because of its great distance from Australia, flights to Lisbon require one or two stops along the way depending on the airline and routing. Many Asian and Middle Eastern airlines operate cheap flights into Lisbon and these are places where most connections occur. Travel time can be as long as 24 hours due to the city’s location in south-western Europe.

Airlines from Australia

Lisbon flights from Australia are operated by two airlines. British Airways offers service from Sydney, Melbourne and Perth with stopovers in Asia and London. Emirates also provides one stop service through its hub in Dubai.

Lisbon Portela International Airport (LIS)

Lisbon’s international airport consistently ranks as one of Europe’s best. Public transport between the airport and city include frequent underground train service with departures continuing until 1am. Bus service is also frequent and can be accessed just outside the arrivals level of Terminal 1. While not usually an option for international passengers with luggage, the airport does offer bicycle rental for use on its lengthy bicycle paths that lead to many areas of the city. Bicycles may be rented at Terminal 1 arrivals near the information desk.

Europe’s oldest capital, Lisbon was settled centuries even before Rome and London. Its long, rich past gives the city a wonderful historic character and intriguing ambiance with beautiful scenery and intriguing surprises around every corner. Handsome buildings hundreds of years old line the quaint streets while ornate fountains and intricate light fixtures decorate the impressive plazas. Colourful limestone homes with attractive terra cotta rooftops climb the surrounding hills creating a uniquely Mediterranean feel for a western European capital.

Lisbon is indeed a Mediterranean city and it enjoys warm summers and mild winters. With its beautiful weather and position along the Atlantic coast, Lisbon’s people have always been drawn to the sea and it is the Atlantic that played a great role in the formation and growth of this ancient city. At one time Portugal was a world power with dominance over the seas. Today, Lisbon is as vibrant as it ever was; still the important world city that it was throughout its great history. The stunning architecture here is a testament to the role Lisbon has played in world affairs and a walk through its beautiful streets and quiet laneways will make you want to explore every corner of this lovely place.
