The noteable sites in Beijing (and surroundings) include the Great Wall, Forbidden City and Summer Palace – visitors flock and admire, with good reason! Though a visit to the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square is must during the day, head here at night as well to take in the bright lights and stunning atmosphere. Here's a few other suggestions for your stay in this thriving city:
- Temple of Heaven – in south-east Beijing, this complex of religious buildings was built in the early 1400s, including a splendid blue-roofed wooden temple. Intricately and ornately decorated, this site has excellent examples of Chinese architecture
- Hongqiao Pearl Market – just east of the Temple of Heaven, 'get your haggle on' and get ready to bargain across 5 floors of pearls, tea, silk, shoes, bags, digital goods and accessories
- Dali Courtyard Restaurant – step out of the bustle if you're in Dongcheng District – down an alleyway, left at the red lantern and down another – into Dali's rustic surrounds where the tea is tasty and the specialty ingredients are flown in from Yunnan province
