Attend an Adelaide Festival Centre show
To the north of the Central Business District is the pride of South Australia's arts scene and, perhaps, all of Australia’s – the Adelaide Festival Centre. Built in 1973 as the first multipurpose arts centre in the country, the Festival Centre has been a hub for dance, theatre, comedy, opera and more. Up-and-coming acts as well as established names in entertainment regularly put on shows here.
The centre has six venues, with shows at each venue on most nights of the week. Ticket prices vary depending on the performance and the location. With so much to choose from, there's sure to be something for everyone on offer.
Wander around Ayers House
Ayers House, the last remaining mansion from the 1800s on North Terrace, is the former residence of Sir Henry Ayers, the South Australia premier (most famous for having Uluru, or Ayers Rock, named after him). Since Ayers' departure, the house has found use as a dance hall, café and a nurse training centre. For the past three decades, however, it has served as a memorial to its early life.
Ayers House stands now as a monument to the premier's time and importance in Adelaide, and tours of the complex are available for those who want to see how the well-off lived way back when. Choose between the standard guided tour or an after-dark candlelit tour led by period-dressed actors.
