Where to Stay In Wellington
Wellington is a compact city with distinct inner precincts fanning out into some diverse and picturesque suburbs. Australians usually choose to stay centrally, to make the most of the CBD attractions.
Many hotels are positioned to take advantage of water views along Lambton Quay and the waterfront, whether they’re close to Parliament in the Pipitea district or near Te Papa, the national museum and gallery. Most things are a walk or bus ride in Wellington, but if you want to be close to the nightlife, look for accommodation near funky Cuba Street or lively Courtenay Place. Further up in the suburb of Mount Cook, you’re staying in the best of both worlds, in Wellington’s leafy hinterland but with panoramic water views.
Choose Oriental Bay for a quieter, sophisticated stay and join the joggers along the waterfront in the morning followed by a coffee al fresco by the harbour. Or stay ocean-side and closer to the airport and some fantastic beaches and great opportunities for biking and hiking.
