Getting Around Christchurch
On foot and bike
Christchurch is a relatively flat city, which makes it easy to explore by foot or bike. The council has recently invested in purpose-built bike lanes to encourage cycling.
Tram
The restored heritage tram is a charming way to see the city’s major attractions in under an hour, although at $20 a day, it’s best enjoyed as a one-off.
Bus
The Metro bus service operates an affordable and reliable service and is the primary form of public transport around Christchurch. An adult day ticket within the city centre costs $3.50, or $2.50 if you buy a Metrocard.
Car
If you’re interested in exploring the breathtaking natural beauty just a short drive from Christchurch, consider renting a car and road tripping one-and-a-half hours to picturesque Akaroa, or two-and-a-half hours to eco-tourism hub Kaikoura.
