More Information

Day 1, Cusco
Make your own way to our joining hotel in Cusco for a welcome meeting at 10:00am. We strongly recommend arriving at least 24 hours before the trip begins to allow additional time to acclimatise to the altitude in Cusco. Please contact us to book pre tour accommodation. The rest of today will be free to explore the wonderful city of Cuzco, discover its many historical gems, or to take part in a choice of optional activities near the city. There will be another meeting this evening for our Wild Andes and Classic Inca Trails, where we will have a full detailed briefing from our local trekking guides about the next few days.

Day 2, Sacred Valley
The next four days will be spent either trekking in the Andes, on our pioneering Wild Andes Trek, on the Classic Inca Trail Trek or for those not wishing to hike, free time to explore and a guided tour of the Sacred Valley on our Train package. For more information please refer to the Trip Notes.

Option 1 - Wild Andes Trek
We leave Cusco early to visit the ruined temples of Sacsayhuaman, before heading to the small Quechua-speaking village of Chinchero. We see a traditional weaving demonstration and visit the Quillarumiyoc temple, then begin our trek to Zurite where we enjoy a traditional dinner and stay in a colonial house. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Option 2 - Classic Inca Trail
This morning we enjoy a guided tour of the Sacred Valley, followed by a visit to the market town of Pisac and free time to explore the impressive archaeological site of Ollantaytambo. We spend the night in a comfortable hotel before our trek starts the following morning. (Breakfast & Lunch)

Option 3 - Train Package
Leaving Cusco with those embarking on the Wild Andes Trek, we visit the fortress of Sacsayhuaman, followed by a scenic drive via the town of Pisac to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. After lunch we return to Cusco, where we stay in a centrally located hotel for a further three nights. (Breakfast & Lunch)

PLEASE NOTE: You must advise at time of booking if you wish to book the classic Inca Trail Trek (which is subject to availability) or the non trekking Train Package, otherwise you will automatically be put on the Wild Andes Trek.

Day 3, Inca Trail
Option 1 - Wild Andes Trek
Zurite - Amaruwatana. After breakfast we start trekking towards Qenteqentiyoc (the Hummingbird Temple), then continue along an ancient path to the top of our first pass at 4,400 metres, where we enjoy amazing views of the Vilcabamba and Vilcanota mountain ranges. We then make our way to our camp in the Sambor Valley. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Option 2 - Classic Inca Trail
Ollantaytambo - Wayllabamba. This morning we catch a bus to Piscaycuscho, where the Classic Inca Trail trek begins, and we are joined by our crew of local porters and cooks. Crossing the River Urubamba, we enjoy stunning views of Mount Veronica and the Incan archaeological remains at Llactapata, before continuing through lush farmland and gradually climbing to our first campsite at Wayllabamba (3000 metres). (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Option 3 - Train Package
Spend today enjoying free time in Cusco, perhaps visiting its museums and churches, shopping for Peruvian textiles and handicrafts or enjoying delicious local cuisine in one of the many restaurants. (Breakfast)

Day 4, Inca Trail
Option 1 - Wild Andes Trek
Amaruwatana - Ancascocha. We have an early start to trek for 2 hours to the top of our second pass at 4,700 metres, where we have fantastic views of the surrounding rock formations and the chance to spot Andean wildlife such as eagles, caracaras or ibises. We then descend for 2 hours into a stunning highland valley for an idyllic lunch beside the glacial Kengo Mayu River, before continuing downhill along the ancient trail to our campsite in the Ancascocha area. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Option 2 - Classic Inca Trail
Wayllabamba - Pacaymayo. It's the most challenging section of the Inca Trail today as we ascend for 4 hours through Andean cloud forest to reach the ‘Dead Woman’s Pass’ at an elevation of 4,200 metres. From here we are rewarded with astonishing panoramic views of the Vilcanota and Vilcabamba mountain ranges, before we descend for 2 hours into the Pacaymayo Valley and to our camp for the night. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Option 3 - Train Package
Today is another free day enjoy all that the city of Cusco has to offer. (Breakfast)

Day 5, Inca Trail
Option 1 - Wild Andes Trek
Ancascocha - Ollantaytambo. Descending through the Silque Canyon, we reach the Camicancha area and stop at a magnificent viewpoint looking towards snow-capped Mount Veronica. From here it’s only a short trek to Chilca, where our trail ends, and our vehicle takes us to rest and shower at our hotel in Ollantaytambo. Later we enjoy a guided tour of the incredible archaeological site of Ollantaytambo and its world-famous Temple of the Sun. (Breakfast)

Option 2 - Classic Inca Trail
Pacaymayo - Winay Wayna. Following ancient stone steps and paths, we ascend to the well-preserved Inca remains of Runkurakay, Sayacmarca, and Phuyupatamarca, also known as the ‘Town above the Clouds’. Heading down the Andean slope, we reach our final campsite at the Winay Wayna ruins. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Option 3 - Train Package
This morning you are picked up from your hotel and driven to the fortress city of Ollantaytambo and your hotel for the night. Here you rejoin the Wild Andes trekkers and your tour leader when they arrive from their trek in the afternoon. (Breakfast)

Day 6, Machu Picchu
Option 1 - Wild Andes Trek & Option 3 - Train Package
Ollantyatambo - Machu Picchu - Cusco. Today we take an incredibly scenic train journey to the town of Aguas Calientes. From here we board a local bus that winds up the mountainside to Machu Picchu, the awe inspiring 'Lost City of the Incas'. Here we enjoy a guided tour and plenty of free time to explore this iconic sight, which was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. In the afternoon we return to Ollantaytambo by train and then drive back to our hotel in Cusco. (Breakfast)

Option 2 - Classic Inca Trail
Winay Wayna - Machu Picchu. Leaving Winay Wayna, we descend through highland jungle to Intupunku, the ‘Sun Gate’ leading to Machu Picchu, where we catch our first views of this historical wonder at sunrise. Our local guide shows us the most important constructions and explains the site’s history and mythology, before some free time to explore the ruins at your own pace. Later we head down to Aguas Calientes and take the train to Ollantaytambo, before returning to Cusco for a well-deserved rest. (Breakfast)

Day 7, Cusco
Today is free to relax, explore this historical city independently or perhaps enjoy an optional activity such as a Spanish class so you can exchange a few words with the locals or a cooking class to learn how to make some delicious Peruvian cuisine.

Day 8, Raqchi
Cusco - Raqchi. Today we drive south to the small village of Raqchi. Here we stay at a homestay as guests of the local villagers in their traditional family homes. The houses are very clean and have basic facilities. This afternoon we visit the Inca ruins of the Temple of Wiracocha at Raqchi, and then see a pottery demonstration at a local artisan centre. This evening the villagers invite us to take part in a traditional Quechua religious ceremony, and we enjoy some lively music from the village's musicians.

Day 9, Chivay
Raqchi - Chivay. Today we drive through the stunning landscape of the Peruvian highlands to the small town of Chivay, which is the gateway to the magnificent Colca Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world. Here we have an optional trip to the nearby hot springs in the evening and spend the night in a local hotel.

Day 10, Colca Canyon
Chivay - Colca Canyon - Arequipa. This morning we head out on a short drive to some of the best viewpoints along the spectacular Colca Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world! The canyon is famous for its resident condors, and we spend a good amount of time at the viewpoints to give ourselves the best chance of spotting them. We also visit a couple of local communities on the way back to Chivay. After lunch, we drive to the beautiful ‘White City’ of Arequipa.

Day 11-12, Arequipa
Situated on the Peruvian Altiplano, Arequipa sits at almost 3,500m above sea level. Set against the stunning backdrop of the snow-covered volcano El Misti, salt lakes, thermal springs and high-altitude deserts, the landscape of the area around Arequipa truly unique. The city itself is very beautiful, full of stunning colonial buildings built out of the soft white volcanic rock that is found in the area. As a university town, there is always a lively buzz about the place and there are plenty of good bars and restaurants to discover. The next two days are free to either explore this beautiful city independently or take one of our optional activities such as a cooking class where you learn to make Peruvian cuisine, a guided tour of the Santa Catalina convent or an exciting morning of white-water rafting on the Chili River.

Day 13, Puerto Inca
Arequipa - Puerto Inca. Today we continue our drive and head all the way downhill to the Pacific coastal resort of Puerto Inca, where we camp at a well-equipped campsite on the beach. This is a great place to relax on the beach, enjoying scenic views of the ocean and a dip in the swimming pool!

Day 14, Nazca
Puerto Inca - Nazca. This morning we head north to the world-famous village of Nazca, the location of the mysterious Nazca Lines. Thought to have been created over 1,000 years ago by the ancient Nazca culture, the Nazca Lines are a series of geometric shapes, figures and lines that have been etched into the ground. Their purpose remains unknown to this day and we stop en route at a viewing platform to get a glimpse of some of these incredible designs.

In the afternoon we have the option to take a 30-minute flight over the Nazca Lines, which is by far the best way to appreciate their size as some designs are so large they can only be fully seen from the sky.

Day 15, Ica and Huacachina
Nazca - Huacachina. Today we continue north, stopping at a viewing platform to get a glimpse of some of the Nazca Lines. We travel on to the stunning desert oasis town of Huacachina, a sparkling oasis nestled in the deserts near Ica in northern Peru - an area that is more reminiscent of the Sahara than South America! The picturesque lagoon here is surrounded by palm trees and towering sand dunes and creates a tranquil oasis in the dusty coastal desert. Here we have the option to head out for an exhilarating evening of sand boarding and dune buggying in the desert.

Day 16, Ballestas Islands
Huacachina - Ballestas Islands - Lima. Today we drive the short distance to Paracas National Park, one of the most important marine reserves in the world. Here we board one of the local boats for an included trip to the Ballestas Islands to see their incredible resident wildlife including Humboldt penguins, Blackish oystercatchers and vast colonies of sea lions. After lunch, we continue north to arrive at the Peruvian capital of Lima, where we stay in a comfortable hotel in the city's historical centre.

Day 17, Lima
Today marks the end of our Peruvian adventure. Arrangements ends after breakfast and hotel check out.
