Vast, majestic Lake Eyre in South Australia is situated at the lowest point in Australia. What makes it truly unique is that most of the time it's a 144 kilometre expanse of dry salt beds. Every so often, though, it fills to capacity and comes to life with flocks of birds. It is arguably best experienced on a guided tour where you can spend a day or two exploring this incredible body of water.

Don't miss these Lake Eyre attractions

  • Lake Eyre 4WD
  • Bird watching at Lake Eyre
  • Overnight camping trips
  • See Lake Eyre from a plane
  • Experience the lake in a kayak

By land or air

Scenic flights are the most popular method of viewing Lake Eyre’s glistening salt pan, so hit the heights and take the opportunity to enjoy some of the outback’s most spectacular panoramic views! Nearly all tours pass over a combination of attractions such as the Birdsville Track, Brachina Gorge and Andamooka’s opal fields.

Some companies offer a four-wheel drive expedition or wetland walk, allowing you to spot some of the astounding wildlife which has adapted to this harsh environment. This region also offers the chance to experience the historic Old Ghan Railway and discover some of the fascinating history of Australia’s isolated interior.

An overnight excursion

If you'd like to take your time when visiting Lake Eyre and its surroundings, multiple day tours are available. Normally departing from Adelaide, you'll hit such spots as the opal capital Coober Pedy, William Creek, the world’s largest cattle station Anna Creek, the historic Oodnadatta Track, the stunning Flinders Ranges and the wineries of Clare Valley.

Camping and other forms of authentic outback accommodation will allow you to experience the tranquillity and seclusion of this region, while experienced operators provide insightful commentary on many scenic sights along the way.
