Puerto Madero, the city's original port, has recently undergone significant revitalisation and today features boutique hotels, trendy bars and international chain restaurants. The region was originally created in 1882 after the Government commissioned businessman Eduardo Madero to construct a new port for the city, with the aim of alleviating congestion issues. Many visitors enjoy a casual stroll along the embankment as a peaceful refuge from the hectic pace of downtown Buenos Aires.

A visit to the Buenos Aires Zoo in Palermo is a great family day outing. The zoo was opened in 1875 and has grown steadily over the past century to now boast over 2,500 animals. The big ticket attractions include the red pandas, hippos, pumas and piranhas. For the younger children there are farmyard animals including goats, roosters and turkeys.

Tango is synonymous with the city and attending a performance is somewhat obligatory.
